Another Flag Controversy

Amherst County, Virginia’s decision in 2004 to remove the small image of the Confederate flag from the county’s official seal continues to attract the attention of local SCV chapters:

“A small image of the flag was in the center of the seal, which was created in 1961 as part of the county’s 200th anniversary. While celebrated by some, critics see the flag as a symbol of the South’s segregated past and slavery.”

Let’s see, the addition was made in 1961. I wonder what event inspired this addition of the Confederate flag as a way to celebrate 200 years of Virginia history? Could the flag have been used as a form of “Massive Resistance” during the Civil Rights Movement?
