Sherman’s March on the History Channel

The History Channel sent me a promotional copy of the upcoming feature "Sherman’s March" which will air on April 22.  I had a chance to view it and plan to write up a review to be posted on the 22nd.  I assume that I was not the only blogger contacted.  If you were in fact contacted and plan to write a review perhaps we can plan to post at the same time, build in the necessary links and get a discussion going — sort of an online roundtable.  Feel free to respond to this post or contact me through my private email.

Nice to hear from you Cash. Hope all is well. I watched it through yesterday. It’s a mixed bag, but given that I had such low expectations going in I will have to sit down and watch it again. You point to the essential problem with documentaries; there are moments in this documentary where the commentary from the talking heads veers off of the overall narrative. That said they did choose the right historians: Mark Grimsley, Steve Woodworth, Joe Glatthaar, and John Marszalek.

    Kevin,

I look forward to your review. I’m cringing thinking about what the History Channel will do. Brooks Simpson has written several times on his experiences with documentaries. His essential point is that the producer has a story to tell and will shape the inputs from the “talking heads” to conform to that story, mostly through editing. Having been sorely disappointed with the History Channel over the years, I’m not holding out much hope that this documentary will be all that great. Hope I’m wrong this this time.

    Regards,
    Cash
