    This isn’t vandalism–or maybe I should say this isn’t just vandalism–it is a political statement. “he letters and numbers “N.T. 11 11 31″ were also written in black paint on the monument’s base and is believed to be a reference to slave Nat Turner who was hanged on Nov. 11, 1831 for starting a rebellion.” Wow.

    I am reminded of how in 1998 New Mexico protesters cut off the foot of the bronze statue of conquistador Juan de Oñate. Oñate had ordered the left feet of almost 100 Acoma men amputated to punish their 1599 rebellion. The 1998 protesters left a note: “Fair is fair.”
