First Biennial Meeting of the Society of Civil War Historians (June 15-17)

We’re just one week away from the first biennial meeting of the SCWH in Philadelphia.  The meeting will be held at the Union League which should be quite nice, although it has a strict dress code.  My wife will have to keep her eye on me as I am a real schlep when it comes to my attire.  I believe there is still time to register so if you have a serious interest in Civil War scholarship it may be worth your while, especially if you live in the Philly area.  Check out the program for a complete list of sessions and participants.

The conference will begin on Sunday with an opening address by George Rable followed by a roundtable discussion on Michael Fellman’s Inside War that includes Dan Sutherland, John Inscoe, Paul Anderson, and Fellman.  My session on teaching is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.  This is the first time that I’ve put together a session so I do hope it goes well.

While I am looking forward to the sessions we all know that conferences are opportunities to see old friends, make new ones, enjoy a few laughs and perhaps a few beers.  I am going to try to put together a cheese steak eating contest between myself, Jeff McClurken, William Blair, Peter Carmichael, John Coski, and John Hennessy.  The next meeting in 2010 is scheduled for the University of Richmond.

Cheese-steak eating contest? Mmmm, I can feel the nausea even now. Looking forward to seeing you and the others soon.
