John Latschar Responds

Most of you have no doubt had a chance to read Pete Jorgensen’s incoherent ramble of a review of the new Visitor Center at Gettysburg, which was posted on Eric Wittenberg’s blog.  I highly recommend that you check out John Latschar’s response.

I look forward to seeing and judging it for myself.

I agree that the Civil War News review was a bit overwrought, although I agree with a couple of his smaller points. The profit motive is writ large at the new VC, between the fees for the movie, the Cyclorama when it opens, the food court, and the gift shop. Maybe it isn’t that big a deal, but it is quite jarring to those of us used to the old VC. I found the museum space to be a little hard to navigate…there isn’t a clear linear path around the displays, and between the low light, the noise from the different video displays, and the crowds, I got a little claustrophobic. I’ll be interested to get your take on that.

    Kevin:

I was at Gettysburg and the new visitor’s center last month. I was quite impressed and thoroughly impressed with what I saw. Was it perfect? No. Would I do things a little differently? Yes. But that’s the case anywhere. I’m sure its a work in progress and will change and evolve as time passes. There’s something there for everyone.
