ALO,

Thanks for the link.

Brendan,

Don't worry about it. You wouldn't have to worry about mixing up Crater titles just a few years ago. It's nice to know that the battle is getting some more attention.

Coates has been writing great stuff. Thanks for the link. And I wanted to apologize for earlier mixing up Schmutz and Slotkin's books. My bad.

Ta-Nehisi Coates had a very moving post on his blog at The Atlantic yesterday regarding his visit to Petersburg and his reflections on the massacre in and after the Crater. It's here:

John Schmutz's book is published by McFarland and has a publisher's list price of $75, though it seems to be available for less at Amazon. Though not an academic press, all McFarland hardcovers seem to be in this price range, and I would agree that their core market seems to be libraries. Heck, even the now-four-year-old book I published through them was recently jacked from $45 to $55.

Richard Slotkin's new Crater book titled "No Quarter" was published by Random House at $28.

The new price is good news. If I had seen that price earlier in the summer, I'd own it already!

Brendan,

Most of their Civil War titles are priced between $35-$45, though Schmutz's book is longer. It's hard to imagine that it was a mistake. No doubt, it has something to do with the size of the first printing.

I really doubt it. The price is generally fixed to the size of the print run. Small print run = high price, which is why university press books are often more expensive than books by big New York publishing houses. They are printed in small batches designed for placement in libraries. Random House, Slotkin's publisher, is unlikely to do such a small print run (or else they would not have accepted the book); the earlier, $75 price seems to me like it was a mistake or in some way not reflective of the publisher's intentions. That's my best guess, anyway.

Brendan,

Thanks for the update. Perhaps the publisher noticed that at $75 the books weren't flying off the store shelves.
