Shelby Foote’s Greatest Hits

June 6, 2010

This is an incredibly helpful video that compiles all of Shelby Foote’s interviews from Ken Burns’s The Civil War.  I use The Civil War extensively in my elective courses on the Civil War and Civil War Memory.  It is still in my mind the best Civil War documentary available.

Kevin, are you sure this is ALL of Foote’s commentary from The Civil War? If this video is accurate, it means that in a ten-hour documentary, he is on the screen for less than ten minutes. Just seems odd, considering that so many look to the series as contributing mightily to Foote’s lasting fame.

Leonard,

Probably not. Shelby Foote made a total of 97 appearances throughout the documentary for a total of 7,683 words. You are free to watch the video again to verify. :D

Thanks, but I’ll take your word for it. Where did you get those figures from anyway?

They were compiled by Prof. Robert Kenzer of the University of Richmond. He was my thesis adviser and at some point we plan on building a website around the transcript of the series for teachers.
