Acquisitions, 02/11

As excited as I am about moving to Boston I am dreading having to pack up my library.  I am seriously considering gutting a sizable chunk of it.  It will be painful, but necessary.  Here is a video I did a few years back on my Civil War library.  Anyway, I haven’t bought too many books over the past months.  Just about everything listed below was mailed to me by the publisher directly.

Kevin, a hearty welcome to the Boston and Greater New England area. There is much to find regarding Civil War history in all the New England States and of course lots of sports history too. I have followed your Civil War Memory blog for a awhile and have learned alot. You adventures in teaching have been great reading and you have touched a great number of lives. I am not sure what what your plans are but I hope it is back in to teaching in some way. Welcome to the neighborhood and good luck moving the library.

It’s really nice to hear from you after all this time. Hope all well with you and thanks for the kind welcome.

I not sure how much sense it made when I did it (much less how much sense it might make now), but when I moved from Western Washington to Mass. 5 years ago or so, I shipped my books via USPS – Media Mail rates. Perhaps that makes sense still, if you (like I was) are not having a freight-liner involved in the move. (Or maybe even if you are . . . ) Expect some wicked snowy winters, in any event, “Global Warming” notwithstanding (and I’ve got the photos and residual aches to prove it).

Reading Judkin Browning’s book right now. First Impressions: A good companion to Barton Myers’ recent work on war and occupation in northeastern North Carolina.

It’s been a good couple of years for North Carolina Civil War history. Barton’s book is excellent as well as a nice collection of essay by Paul Escott. There is also Richard Reid’s fine study of black North Carolinians, who fought as USCTs. I am reading Silkenat’s book, which is also NC focused.

I fully agree, Kevin. For more than twenty years, the only real case study of the war in Eastern North Carolina was Wayne K. Durrill’s War of Another Kind. Now, just in a little over three years, three new studies came out: Myers, Browning, and Mark L. Bradley’s book on Federal troops during Reconstruction in North Carolina. Quite an intellectual flowering, if I say so.

I suspect that you know that books are quite heavy. If you are getting a good sized trunk to p-ut books in, it might take several people to pick it up. Their are small boxes that are made especially for packing books. They hold a number of books, but can still be picked up by one person.

Thanks Arleigh. I’ve moved before and I even worked for Borders Books for a few years so I have some experience moving large numbers of books.

And how will you be dispensing these to your fans?
