Imagine my surprise when I learned after reading Brooks Simpson’s blog that the Virginia Flaggers are reporting a theft at their backwoods location for their Confederate flag off of I-95. No, the flag is still proudly flying, but the excavator that was being used to clear trees is now missing and assumed stolen.
Virginia Flagger spokesman, Grayson Jennings, is already pointing the finger at their opposition.
I wouldn’t do this to anybody. You wouldn’t see any of us going down to downtown Richmond trying to knock the crane over with that American flag.
Let’s be clear. There is absolutely no evidence that any individual or group opposed to this project is responsible. Regardless of the identity of the guilty party, let’s hope they are caught.
At this point, however, I can’t help but share those same concerns that I expressed this past summer when it was reported through various social media channels that Rob Walker – who at the time was documenting the activities of the Flaggers – had foiled an attempt to vandalize the Jefferson Davis Monument in Richmond. We all know how that turned out.
The flag site is on private property and from what I remember the homeowner is fairly close to the pole itself. How exactly did these thieves manage to drive a truck and trailer onto this property, load the excavator and leave without making sufficient noise to be noticed? Actually, Kevin never said that the VA Flaggers did not or should not have the right put up the flag. As a matter of fact he did write, “The Flaggers had every right to express themselves in this way and I suspect that the ceremony was meaningful for everyone who attended.” What he questioned was the necessity of it. Given all of the monuments, grave sites, battlefields and museums in Virginia that could use some help, why instead spend money to buy land, put up the flagpole, etc. so they can fly a flag that few people will see?

If you have an off spring you may want to replace it for a better ride. Failure to do so could void your car’s warranty.
At least people could see the machinery. No one seems to have noticed at first that the original flag no longer flies on the flagpole. Kudos to Corey Meyer for spotting that.

It wasn’t stolen, it’s just hiding out of embarrassment.
I highly suspect they forgot to pay the rental and it was repossessed.
I noticed your comment on Brooks’s blog and I suspect you are onto something. It is surely a much more plausible explanation than what Jennings offers.
Is it just another playing of the victim card which they are so fond of portraying themselves as being?
That was a big piece of equipment to steal without anyone noticing. Don’t they have cameras out there too?
I don’t believe they have cameras set up at this point. Given the concerns expressed early on you would think that some kind of security system would have been a top priority.
I’m sure that new fence will do the job. It would be impossible to get around that. 🙂
