Gettysburg Bound

After three straight days of end-of-the-year faculty meetings I am very much looking forward to a long and quiet drive tomorrow morning to the annual Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. This is my third year taking part in the conference as a member of the faculty. It’s been an incredible experience and I want to once again thank Peter Carmichael and the rest of the staff for the honor of being asked to participate.

This year is going to be quite busy for me.

  • Short workshop with high school students
  • Lecture on the battle of the Crater and historical memory, which will focus specifically on Union soldiers.
  • Break-out session on how to understand Confederate morale and ultimately defeat in Virginia
  • Dine-in discussion about Confederate General Patrick Cleburne’s proposal to arm slaves

CWI is by far my favorite Civil War event of the year. I am looking forward to catching up with old friends and making new ones. Most of all I am looking forward to giving a big hug to one particular person, who has been on my mind quite a bit. As always I will do my best to keep the blog updated over the course of the conference and/or you can follow my tweets [hashtag #cwi2014] @kevinlevin.

p.s. I will be back in Gettysburg on July 5 to give a talk on the Crater as part of the Gettysburg Foundation’s Sacred Trust Talks.

Will portions be broadcast on C-Span again this year?

Yes, in fact part of Saturday is being broadcast live on CSPAN-3. Check their website. Pretty sure you will see Peter Carmichael, Megan Kate Nelson, and Brian Craig Miller.
