Pic of the Day, 06/28

I thought I would share this photograph given that the Supreme Court was in the news this week. This billboard was sponsored by the John Birch Society and unlike many of their billboards this one includes a Confederate flag. Also interesting to note the reference to Belmont, Massachusetts.

Haven’t seen those signs or mention of the Birchers in eons. They’ve been superseded as the vanguard of the lunatic fringe by the Tea Partiers.

Looks like a Tea Party sign from today. Just change the Earl Warren part.

    “Curb the Supreme Court.”

The 2014 Texas GOP platform — the official document outlining what Texas Republicans believe and propose as policy — calls on Congress to “to withhold Supreme Court jurisdiction in cases involving abortion, religious freedom, and the Bill of Rights.” That provision has been in there for years; the folks who put up that billboard are alive and well.

I recall seeing these signs in the late fifties and early sixties in Indiana. One of the reasons JFK was urged not to go to Dallas in Nov. of 1963 was because of this movement and it’s hold on Texas. The Chad Mitchell Trio had a song that was a wonderful send up of the group. It may be on YouTube for those of you too young to even know who the CMT are. Dare I say, in someways not much has changed.
