Bree Newsome Takes Down the Confederate Flag

This morning Bree Newsome scaled the gate around the Confederate flag in Columbia, South Carolina and removed it. She was aided by an individual, who apparently disguised himself as a maintenance worker.

I assume a legal fund will be created on her behalf and I hope lawyers will step up to the plate and take on her case pro bono.

What a wonderful example of our long history of peaceful protest.

I remember Michael Moore when he was running an underground newspaper in Flint, MI and he had two braids on either side of his head and was clearly hurting for money. So was I, I was student teaching and worrying about getting it done as the teachers struck and then were ordered back to the classrooms but weren’t going to go. Ah, good times…

“You come against me with oppression, hate and violence. I come against you in the name of God. This flag comes down today.” (If I remember the words right. ) #FreeBree.

I think Michael Moore has offered to pay her legal expenses.

Wow! It’s at over $84,000 now! I guess I’m not the only one who sees the humor in those complaining about her breaking the law for removing a Confederate flag given what it represents (besides racism). 😉

As I said on twitter earlier, if Cliven Bundy can get off without charges, Bree Newsome should get a Medal of Honor, not an indictment.

What a brave young lady. Courage personified.

I agree. A symbolic gesture, as I am sure she knew she would subject to arrest. Sometimes it takes a woman to get the job done….said in all good humor..

I like to think of it as an interracial symbolic gesture. #FreeBRee 🙂
