On March 28 I will take part in a webinar sponsored by the American Association for State and Local History on the ongoing controversy surrounding Confederate monuments and iconography. This grew out of a panel on the same topic that I took part in back in September at the AASLH’s annual meeting in Knoxville.
This webinar is free for AASLH members and $40 for non-members. Other participants include Bob Beatty, Stan Deaton, and Sheffield Hale.
While I suspect that the direction of the discussion will be geared to the challenges facing public historians working at various historic sites and institutions, it should be of interest to anyone who has been thinking about questions concerning how we remember the Civil War in public spaces.
I am very much looking forward to the discussion.
Is this going to be tweeted or blogged ?I will miss this due to time zones and work commitments. Recently at a conference I was talking to some of the relatively few academic specialists on the ACW in my country, many of whom who have published with US academic presses on the war and we all expressed relief that being foreigners we have flexibility in how we can still talk about the war and too there was a wide range of reactions off the record to recent trends in relation to the faster pace of protest around Confederate symbolism from an understanding of the reasons but a dislike of the heavy handed nature of the actions to the baffled – this is bizarre and hysterical -“only in America” type reaction
It looks interesting
I registered and I’m looking forward to it.
Glad to hear it.
Based on the Knoxville conference, what directions to you anticipate this webinar to take?
Hi Chris,
Will know more after tomorrow.
I would love to see it.
