Iam sorry to have missed yesterday’s meeting of the newest chapter of the League of the South, which has been organized in Anniston, Alabama. The John C. Calhoun Chapter held their first meeting yesterday at the local Western Sizzlin’ where the organization’s national president, Michael Hill, railed against the abuses of the federal goverment. I can’t stop laughing as I imagine Hill addressing an audience that is continually making its way to the buffet bar to load up on as much bad steak as possible for $5.95. To be honest, I am not so much interested in what was said as I am in the total cholesterol level of the group.

A friend of mine swears that once, at the Golden Corral Buffet in Fredericksburg, that he saw a man use his tray as his plate to load up…
I find it funny that so many people find my commentary to be offensive and even a threat to society. It seems to me that this kind of behavior ought to concern us much more.
At least we don’t have to worry about this organization becoming a real threat. Given the location of most of their meetings, by the time they reach sufficient numbers members will begin dying off from heart failure.
My great-grandmother, lifetime member of the UDC, would never have allowed her ladies to meet in such a low brow environment. Well, actually, I’m attributing to my ancestors my own romaticized view of the South. For all I know she could have been at Sizzlin’ elbowing her way to the dessert bar.
Regardless, if I can find a LOS chapter that can quote the peasant scene from Holy Grail, I’ll join. “Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help, help, I’m being repressed!”

My experience with UDC chapters is actually good food. Nice little sandwiches with tea or coffee. I don’t think they have steak on the buffet at the Sizzlin’. Rather, I like to call it the Starch Bar–mac ‘n’ cheese, corn, cornbread, rolls, fried okra. . .stuff that will harden the arteries and maybe send these guys into an early retirement.

I have done a ton of presentations to genealogical groups as well as several SCV and UDC chapters, and nearly all of them hold their meetings in restaurants with buffets. The worse one was when I met the head of a SCV chapter at a restaurant to give my presentation, and found out that the meeting was moved to a local hot dog joint.
