Prayers For the Descendants of Invaders

Update: Once again, the post was removed.

I can only imagine the personal courage behind these sincere words of concern from the SHPG for those Northerners in the path of hurricane Sandy.  As the descendant of people who would not arrive in this country until the early twentieth century, I truly appreciate Carl’s willingness to look beyond our complicity in the unconstitutional invasion of the South.  In all seriousness, things are fine up here in Boston.  We had a few hours of high winds, but through it all we never lost power.  The same can’t be said for my hometown of Atlantic City, New Jersey.  My thoughts are with my good friends still living in the area.  Hope all of you are safe.

I went back on the other site…I was told to read the rules!!! I was not allowed to be on this site. I did not realize when I made the above statement that it would cause such grief… unsure of where I should be…

    • Kevin Levin Nov 1, 2012 @ 12:09

What rules might you be referring to? Your comments will be approved as long as they are on-topic and not insulting in any way. Those judgments are made by me. As far as I can tell your previous comment has not caused any “grief.”

I’ll apologize in advance as I am new in dealing with these sites and I have to start off with a question..to put your mind at ease, I worry everyone with a million questions!!! What pray tell does “subscribing to the RSS feed” mean? and is there a fee? The group I belong to has discussed this issue, prayers for the north. I am sure they will find me cocky because I have decided to examine the matter myself. I am certain no adult would act in the manner they are reporting,I feel assured that they dont recognize satire, and I am going to prove it! My girlfriend says the owners will censure my statements,as neither side wants to look foolish and I guess she is right as while the civil war place doesnt censure me, maybe because I post so little, but the cooking site only prints half of what I say, if you say its because of my cooking i’ll be upset! I was going back and forth between groups and comparing remarks, one of the officers of my group had written a review about a published work of yours,it was initially the reason for my risking viruses and I.D. theft to leave the safety of the group..He had stated he felt your work was well written, impressivly researched and he predicted you would become renowned in your field… everything I have seen from him is always informative and interesting! That along with the fact his his honesty and unbiased opinion made me feel I did not need to assess the matter any further, now though I am glad I have…I just wrote him asking if you are the same person on which he wrote, and if so was he aware of this childish nonsense? After reviewing the entire subject I decided I must be naive as I am taken aback by your post and the comments… Am I allowed to disagree with the host? I am assuming you are Kevin? You spent the entire page telling the public what you do, pointing out you are talented, even renowned in your field, that you are well read, that people seek you out for advice and appearances, it convinced me I had joined the wrong page! then I find you bullying…Did I miss something? Your readers, you and I are seen as a group that wants to learn and they have come to the right place…yet you started this? I was certain I was missing something if it was not satire or humor in any form I said to myself- there is no way he is throwing away so much talent- this had to be a lone occurrence but then going back thru your diary it appears to be a common theme. I entered this lighthearted and certain people were exaggerating- I exit disappointed, not just with the people but in myself for getting caught up in publicity and hype. I would like to comment to your readers:
Terry Johnson Oct 30, 2012 6:08 Mr Johnson, regardless of what has been portrayed her the individual as well as the group along with myself, only meant our prayers and good wishes to everyone. Many of us having gone thru this countless times, have started gathering everything from water to money. God Bless! Keith Muchowski Oct 30, 2012 6:23 I am confused…in one breath you say they’re not worth it but at the same time you are slamming Mr. Roden for innocently pointing out northerners and southerners? Neil Hamilton Oct.30 2012 8:32 Sir, with all due respect here, in the south ladies act like ladies or I would explain what is wrong with you.. not your statement. Do you remember how the nation labeled Southerns, Cajuns and Louisianans during Katrina? in fact most every post on this subject all contain snide remarks, you yourself label Mr Roden as a neo-confederate and a blind supporter of the lost cause. Maybe it is me, but I dont see a difference between you and he…except that Mr Roden was jesting. When I go back to the group..IF they allow me back…I intend on apologizing, as recently there was a discussion that developed into an argument, they had been assessing they as southerners were abused, ridiculed and harrassed, I argued they were immature, biased conspiracy nuts and I planned on quitting the group. Now it appears as if they were correct. Bummer adds the coup de grace with his examination of religion and name calling. Mr Levin, I am sorry I visited your regime! it was not my intention to get mixed up in anything but to prove you and your readers were joking, I am disappointed in some one of your statue.

      Thank you..

    • Kevin Levin Nov 1, 2012 @ 10:50

      Hi Lisa,

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Sorry you think this is an appropriate response at a time of so much suffering.

    • Neil Hamilton Nov 5, 2012 @ 23:06

      Ms. Lisa Robinson,

Ma’am, I have been taught all my life that ladies were ladies, no matter what region of the United States they hailed from. And please, let me assure you, I have met some wonderful ladies both North and South of the Mason-Dixon and I treat them as such.

As for what is wrong with me, I consider Mr. Roden an American, nothing more, nothing less, just the same as I am. All the true Yankees and Rebels have long passed from this world, Katrina or Sandy notwithstanding. Whenever Mr. Roden makes the statement that he is praying for Yankees, no matter how wrong or evil they are, he is not praying for anyone but himself. If Mr. Roden was “jesting” I suggest it was a very poor jest, not even if it were given with a slight backhand, it would still come across as a slap in the face to any thinking person.

Might I suggest that Mr. Roden’s words speak for himself in that he supports a version of history that is neither factual or realistic and, by way of his prayer, pretends that a conflict, long over and decided for the better, is still ongoing with such “prayers” as he has given, jest or not. Let me assure you, it is not Southerners that are “abused, ridiculed, and harrassed.” Those who prattle such insincere prayers for their fellow Americans during a time of danger and need cannot be taken seriously and are doing their absolute best to deny they are fellow Americans, all in the name of a dead Confederacy, the worst idea ever conceived in American history.

I only pray that Mr. Roden and his fellow members can realize such and wake up to the fact that the Civil War is over and that the country the live in at the present is the United States of America and not some Confederate heritage fantasy as an occupied region of that failed experiment in human bondage.

You may feel the need to apologize, but please do so for yourself and not for me or the words I typed here. My words were far more honest and forthright than a half-a**ed, nonsincere prayer that benefited only Mr. Roden in front of his audience at SHPG.

      Sincerely,
      Neil Hamilton

        Neil,

The SHPG folks have, to borrow a phrase, decided to wrap themselves in the Stainless Banner and carry a Cross.. They make a big, prideful show of their religiosity, having an official chaplain, official group prayers posted every week, and so on, but mainly it’s used simply as another means of reaffirming each other of their godly righteousness, and denigrating others who either don’t believe as they do, or choose not to make big, flashy show of their beliefs. Frequently they use their self-aggrandizing righteousness, which they naturally project back onto all things and persons Confederate (e.g., the CBF as an explicitly and intentionally Christian symbol), as a cudgel against anyone and anything they don’t like. And it’s often purely gratuitous, not really prompted by anything. As one example, someone posted recently the famous picture of Grant and his staff sitting outside on pews removed from a nearby church as further “evidence” or the Yankees’ blasphemy and hatred of Christianity or something like that.

So the prayer for “the descendants of those who illegally and unconstitutionally invaded our homeland” is entirely in keeping with SHPG’s particular brand of prideful and belligerent Chrstianism. Which is to say, it doesn’t much reflect much in the way of Christian virtues as most people understand them to be.

        Jesus wept.

The only Yankees I don’t care for are the ones from New York who didn’t win the World Series. Other than that, this once again confirms that Carl Roden is a fool who just likes to hear himself talk.

  • Neil Hamilton Oct 30, 2012 @ 20:32

    “Though they are Yankees…”

I’m sorry, but the stupidity of such a label for fellow Americans in a time of great suffering and danger is beyond my understanding.

Mr. Roden, we are ALL in the same boat and it does not matter which part of the boat you have parked your butt on, we all sink or swim together. No hurricane is going to stop and consider which part of the country to attack, it favors neither North or South. Nor is any terrorist going to give a praying neo-Confederate, lost cause rear guard any special consideration because he is a blind supporter of “Southern Heritage.”

No, Mr. Roden, your in this with the rest of us, no matter what you spout about this history of this nation of 150 years ago. Keep your prayer if you continue to be so selfish in your concerns, sir. It’s not honest in what I consider true Christian concern should be.

    Sincerely,
    A Fellow American
    Neil

    • Bummer Oct 31, 2012 @ 9:23

I’m sure that Mr. Roden is not anywhere near the “boat I’m in”. His prayers are maybe all that is keeping him afloat. It ceases to amaze me how the neo-confederates justify and camouflage their rhetoric in the name of god and humanity. I’m done.

      Bummer

My family in MD and Philly did OK: first time in years my parents haven’t lost power in a major storm, actually. But we just visited Manhattan over the summer, so seeing the damage there is a bit unnerving. I didn’t realize I was taking “before” pictures.

Rodden’s “offering” is …. vile. I have no other words.

    • Kevin Levin Oct 30, 2012 @ 6:29

Vile as it is, I do believe Roden did his best.

  • Keith Muchowski Oct 30, 2012 @ 6:22

Wow. You know, Kevin, I’ve never gotten too involved in following the Southern Heritage crowd because I’m just so busy and they’re just not worth it, but that message is really something. Incredible that someone would say such a thing at this time.

I’m glad you all made out alright. We got lucky in our neighborhood as well. Counting our blessings.

    • Kevin Levin Oct 30, 2012 @ 6:25

That you even need to qualify such a statement in any way reflects a warped world view.

  • Terry Johnston Oct 30, 2012 @ 6:08

    Kevin:

Just so you know, looks like Absecon Island got creamed. Friend in Margate said downtown was “destroyed”——businesses under water sand sharks swimming in the streets. We evacuated to PA. Not sure when we’ll be allowed back. Hope your family’s OK.

    • Kevin Levin Oct 30, 2012 @ 6:10

Glad to hear you are safe. My family had to evacuate from Mays Landing. We sold the Ventnor house about ten years ago. Any word on Dino’s Subs?

      • Terry Johnston Oct 30, 2012 @ 6:16

No word on Dino’s. But the Wawa and CVS at the corner of Ventnor and Washington Aves. are apparently under water—or mostly so.

        • Kevin Levin Oct 30, 2012 @ 6:25

You mean the one across fro Sack-O-Subs? Do you see how my mind works when it comes to my hometown?

          • Terry Johnston Oct 30, 2012 @ 6:28

Nope, the one near Margate city hall / fire department HQ. Know which I mean?

            • Kevin Levin Oct 30, 2012 @ 6:29

              Got it.

  • Matt McKeon Oct 30, 2012 @ 5:39

Thanks for the prayers and thoughts, Carl. When the umpteeth hurricane/tornado/plague of locusts hits the Southland, we will respond, as is our wont, will more tangible forms of assistance. Because the rest of the country isn’t refighting the Civil War.

No worries here in Massachusetts, too far north for the storm, looks like New Jersey and New York got the worse of it.

By the way, Carl is a massive tool, and he isn’t refighting the Civil War as much as “relosing” it.

    • Kevin Levin Oct 30, 2012 @ 5:41

We will make sure that Carl gets all the federal assistance he needs. 🙂
