Civil War Memory Turns Eight

This week marks the eighth anniversary of Civil War Memory. I’ve been blogging for so long and it has become such a regular part of my daily routine that I have trouble remembering the time before.

No doubt there is an intrinsic value to blogging that can be found in the act of writing, the content itself and the rich conversations that often follow. But if spending time away from the classroom for close to two years after moving to Boston in 2011 taught me anything it’s that my passion for history is primarily social in nature. The social in social media only gets you so far.

What happens on this site is of great value, but in my more reflective moments what stands out more than anything else are the people that I’ve had had the opportunity to meet in person over the past few years through Civil War Memory. These are folks that I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with professionally, who I’ve gotten to know personally, and who push me to be a better historian and teacher.

Much of the success that I’ve enjoyed professionally since I started blogging is the result of the kindness of others and the many friendships that have evolved. I don’t take any of it for granted.

As always, thanks to all of you for making Civil War Memory part of your historical universe.

Congrats Kevin. This is the first blog I check daily.

A belated congratulations on your success Kevin, and thanks for keeping us informed on your research, Civil War history, and related topics, including the more unsavory events and people who try to influence our understanding of how the past is remembered. You’ve always been very fair with your blog, one not to be missed!

Your contributions to expanding the perspective of this subject has had a great impact and opened the eyes of many. Mine included. Well done.

Thanks Kevin, I wanted to share an article I recently did for the CWT on battlefield preservation from an environmentalist’s point of view: http://www.civilwar.org/battlefields/fredericksburg/fredericksburg-news/the-forgotten-casualty.html. I am grateful for the 2.5k likes on the CWT site, but what I find particularly interesting are the comments over on the CWT’s Facebook page. Lots of really angry stuff about killing Lincoln and Sherman burning in hell (which has absolutely nothing to do with the piece.) When people ask why I quit blogging and writing about the Civil War I tell them because way too many people are still fighting it.

There are only a handful of blogs that I visit that offer not only an interesting topic, but the intellectual chops to make me sometimes rethink a position I previously held. This is one of those sites. Thanks for that.

Now if you could just leave those poor black Confederates alone. 🙂

    Best
    Rob

Thanks for the kind words, Rob.

I’ve always used this blog to share what’s on my mind. When I was researching my book you could expect frequent posts on the Crater and related topics. As you know I am currently writing a book about camp servants and the myth of the black Confederate soldier. There should be no surprise as to why I continue to post on the subject. Thanks again.

Congratulations, Kevin. I seem to recall having some impact on your decision to enter the blogging fray, and if I did, I am very glad to have done so. Best wishes for your continued success.

You did indeed, Eric. At the time it was just you, Mark Grimsley, Dimitri Rotov and a few others who held court.

    Congrats!
