Right now the Virginia Flaggers are holding a rally at Charlottesville’s Lee Park in anticipation of a city council meeting tonight that will discuss the future of Confederate monuments in the city. The Flaggers will likely take the opportunity to share with city residents that the Confederate flag has nothing to do with the history of racism and white supremacy and that Robert E. Lee was an early civil rights leader.

Just look at the Trump memorabilia. It is all so ridiculous. As someone whom you would probably identify as being politically right of center, I sincerely apologize that Trump is almost assuredly going to be the nominee of the Republican Party.

Nathan Towne I am also tend to be more conservative ideologically, but this year’s election campaign is an utter joke and I really don’t see a candidate for either party I could fully have confidence in running the country. That being said I don’t know that Trump is most likely going to end up as the nominee for the Republican Party. Look at the election of 1860. Going into the Republican Convention in Chicago William Seward went in as the clear front runner, but couldn’t put together a coalition to gain him the nomination, and so Lincoln was the nominee despite being well down the ranks in terms of voter support. I see the same issue for Trump . He consistently garners around 35% of the vote, but that means 65% of the vote in the primaries don’t support him. I don’t see Trump having the support of the majority of the Republican Party to be the nominee.
I appreciate the response. Trump needs approximately 56% of the remaining delegates to reach 1237 delegates and clinch the nomination heading the convention. He still has a plausible chance of reaching that number before the convention. Even if he doesn’t though, say he were to enter the nomination less than 150 delegates away from winning the nomination. I find it hard to imagine that if he is that close to winning the nomination, that he won’t be able to win in the convention. It could be devastating for the Party if he is denied the nomination that close to the requisite number of delegates.
Hillary Clinton has virtually won the nomination on the Social Democratic ticket. Clinton will beat Trump in the General Election.
Yes I agree it is all part of the same campaign. The one to erase Confederate History. There is no doubt that the Civil War had a great deal to do with the institution of Slavery, but once again people are trying to put 21st Century values in 19th Centenary people. Political correctness has gone to far. It is time to stand up to it.

Robert Davis, I do not think that it is accurate to claim we are “trying to put 21st Century values in 19th Centenary people”. Our nation had long struggled with and was moving away from slavery while the South refused to budge. The argument that led to the Civil War was slavery, it was the bridge that could not be built when both sides wanted a different outcome. It is inescapable that it is “political correctness” that caused the myth of the “Lost Cause” and the raising of these monuments, memorials and statuary to perpetuate white supremacy even though the slavery war had been lost. It is just inescapable if you have the integrity to look at the whole of the history.
I hope the numbers were small and insignificant even though I know the call went out to all “good confederates” to come and show out. This is a decision for Charlottesville not the nation, not even the state of Virginia. Funny how they always want to “vote” on such matters. Why bother having a council, just vote on everything…
