It may’ve been an activity a naturally curious young man engaged in, he may’ve thought nothing of the moral implications at his young age. Seems much more likely to me, however, that this segment in his letter was meant to scandalized his mother, and shame her into bringing him home.
It’s an interesting suggestion, but I don’t know of anything else contained in his letters at this time that would lend support to this interpretation. Thanks for the comment.
