The Best Civil War Books of 2021

Thanks once again to Terry Johnston at The Civil War Monitor magazine for inviting me to contribute to their annual feature that highlights some of the best Civil War titles of the year. It’s always a challenge to whittle my selections down to one or two for each category. Though much of my time right now is focused on researching and writing my biography of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, I still read a great deal.

Please feel free to share your favorite Civil War books of the year in the comments section below. I am always interested to see what others are reading. A good deal of my own reading list comes from the suggestions of people like you.

Finally, consider purchasing a subscription to the magazine. It’s well worth the investment.

Kevin, not sure of the proper place for this but for a first time in a long time I went to the Civil War Book Review site and found that the number of reviews they used to do severely reduced. They used to have regular features and those are gone too. Do you know what happened. Thanks.

      I noticed that as well.
