Hulk Lawyer: Black Confederate?

Neo-Confederates and others love to trot out the Black Confederate myth during Black History Month as a means to promote their twisted idea of diversity. Of course, it has nothing to do with diversity or history and everything to do with the continued attempt to drive a wedge between the Confederacy and slavery and protect the “honor” of the common soldier.

This year has been no different. Yesterday a man identified as John Carlo addressed a school board meeting in Clark County, Nevada. His goal was to highlight the importance of Black History Month by encouraging teachers to acknowledge the history of Black Confederates. Here is his testimony.

After watching it a couple times I realized that the individual Mr. Carlo was likely attempting to reference is Holt Collier, who went off to war with Tom Hinds as his body servant. Unfortunately, Holt Collier gets us no closer to a Black Confederate than Hulk Lawyer, though it made for a good laugh.

The historical record is very clear as to Collier’s status in the Confederate army. Here is his pension application. You will notice that is specifically intended for former “servants.”

The video briefly trended on twitter yesterday. Viewers had a bit of fun with it by posting pics of The Incredible Hulk.

The entire incident not only highlights the absurd claims made by people about the Confederacy and slavery, it also reflects the circus atmosphere of recent school board meetings and growing attempts in states across the country to censor the teaching of American history.

We still have a lot of work to do.

    Kevin,

I hope you have the rights to “Hulk Lawyer” so when Marvel makes the inevitable movie you can get a cut. I can just see it now…..

“In a world where evil reigns and property disputes are inflaming passions throughout the land comes one “man” who has had enough. Whether it’s drawing up a will or putting America on the path to legal harmony there is only one….Hulk Lawyer!”

“Me only lawyer who has the power to obliterate the insurance companies and restore order to the universe! Don’t hire a lawyer with a hammer. Hulk Lawyer don’t need no stinkin’ hammer!”

Void where prohibited by law or where yahoos insist on bastardizing real history.

    Best
    Rob

At first I thought he was referencing personal injury attorney, John Foy, aka The Strong Arm. Maybe Hulk Lawyer and The Strong Arm could be a great crime-fightin’ duo?

While there are a few exceptions, neoconfederates are generally dishonest, racist idiots who don’t know the first thing about any historical analysis, lack the integrity to acknowledge their errors, and frequently simply make things up.

You should respond to this bozo’s presentation by sending the school board autographed copies of your book.

      Good idea, Jim.

Every February I post an article a day in celebration of Black History Meeting Month on various Civil War Facebook pages. I get a fair number of “likes” and polite “Thank You”s in response but I also get two other patterned responses.

First are those who denounce Black History Month.

Second are those who demand I write about Black Confederates. Weird how they think they can command me to write about a topic!

Regardless of whether they are explicit, it is always a denunciation of Black History Month.

Always a denunciation? No it isn’t, Kevin. You’re like Al, claiming to know things you can’t know.
