In Motion: The African-American Migration Experience is an interactive website that explores migration patterns and slave life in the western hemisphere. I came across it the other day and it looks to be a first-rate site. The site includes maps, short movies, educational materials for the classroom, and timelines. I am always on the lookout for good maps to be used in my classroom. You won’t find a better collection on the history of slavery in each section of the colonies/nation along with additional maps that trace migratory patterns of African Americans right up to 2000.

"In this stunning and well-researched book, Kevin Levin catches the new waves of the study of memory, black soldiers, and the darker underside of the Civil War as well as anyone has... Levin is both superb scholar and public historian, showing us a piece of the real war that does now get into the books, as well as into site interpretation."

Hi Kevin,
Thanks so much for passing that website along; it is really good. My powerpoints will be looking much better now!
Sam.
This site is good in portraying the global picture of slavery rather than focusing too inwardly on the American South. It’s just more evidence that you are in fact interested in the broader picture of race in American rather than simply in the South.
